Imphal, December 14:
A awareness generation project for organisers which would continue for eight days has began at Khuman Lampak Youth Centre from today.
Chairperson of Manipur State Social Welfare Advisory Board RK Bidita, president of SPY Ch Ibohal and secretary of Manipur State Social Welfare Kamala attended the inaugural function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
The programme is being organised by Society for Promotion of Youth (SPY) and is to-sponsored by Central Social Welfare Advisory Board and Manipur State Social Welfare Advisory Board.
In all 48 organisers coming from different parts of the State are taking part in the awareness generation programme.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Bidita said despite the fact that women occupied a better position in Manipuri society in comparison to their counterparts in other parts of the country, Manipuri women still face lot of difficulties due to ignorance and lack of understanding of their rights and duties.
Manipuri womenfolk have also the inherent defect of taking up a cause without understanding its pros and cons properly, she observed.
Though they are in the forefront in taking up various issues confronting the society, they seem to fail in understanding some of the basic problems being faced by their peers in the society, she said, adding that this is really unfortunate for all.
While appealing to the organisers to work sincerely, she pointed out that the Board would continue to extend assistance on the basis of their performance.
Giving the presidential address, Ibohal stressed on the need for spread awareness among the womenfolk on various aspects of law, environment, sanitation, nutrition, etc.
They might be illiterate or literate, they should have the knowledge of these things, he said and added that women have great role to play even in combating the HIV/AIDS epidemic which is becoming one of the scourges of modern society.
