Strongly condemning the abduction of candidates and creating fear psychosis in the run up to the elections of students' bodies of educational institutions, students of several colleges and Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) have demanded the immediate release of the abducted students.
Referring to increasing trend of abducting candidates of student's union elections, DESAM demanded an immediate end to such undesrred acts.
Amidst report that a social and culture secretary contestant of DM College of Arts has been abducted, the DESAM also demanded the release of DMC Science general secretary candidate W Rockychand immediately.
Interacting with mediapersons at the DESAM office this evening, general secretary of the student body PC Nutan contended that some unscrupulous elements, disguised as members of underground organisations, are indulging in disruptive activities to create fear psychosis among the student community especially in view of the forthcoming student�s union elections.
Strongly condemning such elements getting involved in the student union elections, the DESAM general secretary desired that individual with questionable integrity should not intervene in the affairs of the student community.
He also reiterated the demand to free Rockychand, and urged the public to cooperate in tracing the abducted student.
Terming the abduction as direct challenge to the student community that need to be dealt with a strong hand, Nutan also appealed to all concerned for free and fair conduct of the student election while calling upon the candidates and their supporters from extravagant expenditure during the poll.
The student leader also warned that in case the disruptive act do not stop or the abducted candidates not release at the earliest various forms of agitation would be launched.
The Principal, staff, election committee and students of DM College of Science also fervently appeal to all concerned to release those students abducted by unknown person/s in time for the December 15 scrutiny of the student union elections.
Students of the same institution also staged sit-in-protest from 10.10 am till 3 pm today to denounce the abduction of Rockychand.
The protestors also warned of launching agitations in case the candidate is not released by tomorrow.
Joint DM College Students' Union and Salai Apunba Nupi Lup taking serious note of abduction of student candidates also demanded immediate release of all the captive students.
In another development, social and culture secretaryship candidate of DMC Arts, Thangjam Robindro who was abducted by unknown persons at around 1.30 pm from near the main gate of the, institution today was later released in late evening.
Meanwhile, Imphal College Students' Union strongly condemned the incidents of tearing nomination papers of Debate and Extension contestant Aribam Suryakesh Sharma and physically assaulting a secretary of the .Union yesterday.
The Union also appealed to all concerned to desist from such unde-sired acts and urged authorities concerned to take immediate action.
The Union also identified the person who tore the nomination paper as one Soibam Debananda, who is not a student of the college.
