Imphal, June 16 2019: For the first time ever, Manipur was able to produce candidates who scored above 600 in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) this year.

Speaking to media persons at COMET coaching centre today, Deny Moirangthem who scored 1st rank for the State in the NEET exam, Sapam Debabaho who scored 2nd and Kumkum Gangmei, who scored 1st rank in the ST category for the State, spoke about their journey and their hurdles in overcoming the impossible and achieving such a milestone.

Deny Moirangthem, who came 1st in the State in NEET 2019 Medical Entrance Exam, is the son of Moirangthem Chaoba Singh and Moirangthem (O) Amita Devi of Sagolband Mabudhou Mantri Leikai.

He secured an all India ranking of 2025th rank and 563th in OBC category.

This is his third attempt and he scored a total of 636 marks out of 720 total, which is a first for Manipur.

Deny studied at Heritage Convent School, Uripok, from Nursery to Class X and he passed the HSLC exam conducted by BOSEM in the 1st division (85.4 pc).

He then continued Class XI and II at Xtra Edge School Ghari and also passed the Class XII exam conducted by COHSEM in the 1st division (81.2 pc).

After completing his Class XII, Deny appeared NEET for the first time without going to any coaching class.

Then, he began going to COMET coaching centre and attempted NEET for the second time and this time he was able to score around 441 marks (15 marks less than the eligible mark).

In his third attempt this year, he scored a total of 636 marks thus becoming the first in the State to do so.

Speaking to media persons, Deny Moirangthem said that he wanted to pursue computer engineering but while he was about to complete his Class XII, he had to go to hospital frequently due to an illness among his family members.

After seeing the doctors, their works and contribution, he was determined to become a doctor and help the people, he added.

Stating that he wants to become a cardiologist, Deny said that his parents are both Ayush doctors and added that his elder brother is also appearing the NEET exam.

On the other hand, 2nd rank holder of the State Sapam Debabaho is the son of Sapam Seitya Singh and Sapam (O) Ibemcha Devi of Khongjom Chongtham Mamang Leikai.

This is his 5th attempt and he secured 3827th all India rank and 1184 all India OBC rank, by scoring a total of 621 marks out of the total 720.Debabaho said that he studied till class II at a primary school and then continued his study till class X at Khongjom Standard English School.

He came in the 1st division (88.2 pc) in class X and passed Class XII (79.8 pc) from Xtra Edge School.

He explained that he began attempting NEET just after completing class XII, without continuing college.

He informed that he attempted his first NEET without any coaching but in the second attempt, he went for coaching at MECI coaching centre.

Then for his 4th and 5th attempt, he went to COMET coaching centre and this year, he secured the 2nd rank in the State.

He conveyed that he decided to attempt the exam until he succeeded, to fulfil his grandfather's wish.

Debabaho said that his grandfather was a priest (Maiba) and he often said that the greatest religion is to help others.

Debabaho's father is a teacher at an aided school while his mother is an Anganwadi worker.

His elder brother is preparing to undergo necessary training to join the Railways as a mechanical engineer while his elder sister is married now.

On the other hand, Kumkum Gangmei, who came 1st in the ST category for the State, is the daughter of G Naipu R Naga and Lotus Remei of Poumai Colony, Chingmeirong.

She secured 26038th all India rank and 112th all India rank in the ST category, by scoring a total of 545 marks.

This is her second attempt.

Kumkum's father is an Electrical Engineer at Doordarshan Assam while her mother is a housewife.

Her two elder sisters are doing BDS and veterinary degree courses respectively while her younger brother is studying in class X at Kiddies Corner School Chingmeirong.

She studied from KG to class I at St Edmund School Sanakeithel and from class II to VII, she studied at St Anthony School Sagakpham.

She then shifted to Kiddies Corner School from class VIII and appeared class X from the same school during which she came in 1st division (84.5 pc).

She studied class XI and XII at MECI Explorer Academy and passed class XII in the 1st division (87.2 pc) as well.

Just after class XII, she appeared NEET without going to any coaching classes.

For the second attempt, she went to COMET coaching centre for a year and finally passed NEET in her second attempt, securing the 1st rank in the ST category in the State.
