Imphal, August 06 2014:
The Karang Island Development Organisation (KIDO) has demanded to provide a surface route from Karang to Thanga which could be constructed with the phumdis of the Loktak Lake which have been cleaning since long back by K-Pro Company.
KIDO has urged the Government of Manipur to start the work within one week failing which strong protest will be launched.
While briefing the media persons held on Wednesday at Manipur Press Club, the former President of KIDO H Gitajen Meitei stated that Rs 500 crore was sanctioned to K-Pro Company through Loktak Development Authority (LDA), out of which Rs 300 crore has been utilized in cleaning the phumdis of the Lake.
In addition to it, a work order of Rs 60 crore has also been sanctioned to HVS Construction Pvt Ltd for the same purpose.
In this juncture, Gitajen continued, the people of Karang see no change between pre-cleaning and post-cleaning in the water body of the Lake.
Conveying the condition of the fresh water of the north east, he mentioned that the water of the Lake now remains stagnant owing to presence of phumdis in abundance.
Apart from this, the children and pregnant women of the Karang have faced hardship many a time while going to school and hospital due to absence of road connectivity with the rest of the world particularly with Thanga.
In this connection, he expressed that the phumdis which were collected by K-Pro Company from the Lake could have been used for constructing a surface road between Karang and Thanga instead of transporting the phumdis to other location, adding that Karang has 3000 population and 1500 voters who are facing road connectivity problem every day.
He also mentioned that the road connectivity of the Karang should be a part of the Tourism development in the Loktak Lake, further informing that KIDO will submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Manipur on the coming August 8 .
