Even as the district has frequent reports and cases about child trafficking and abuse, the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Ukhrul is still unable to liberate children from such oppressions.
The Government has instituted District Child Protection Unit at every district of the country to protect the children from trafficking, abuse and provide basic cares, education of the vulnerable children for ensuring the helpless children at various level endangering them.
The centrally sponsored programme DCPU under integrated child protection scheme, launched in 2009 has provided imperative cares and services at the Government sponsored institution to the needy children of the country.
Under this, 11 staff of DCPU appointed for Ukhrul district in October 2013, and the office was allotted at Mini secretariat complex in February 2014, yet their presence and activities remained a big questions to the citizen of Ukhrul.
The foremost duty of DCPU were child mapping living in vulnerable condition, ensure them with government assistance, benefit as a linkages between Government and the children.
While interacting with some of the staff of social welfare and ICDS Ukhrul, the district administration had allotted two rooms at the western block of Mini Secretariat, Ukhrul.
The office infrastructure, material are yet to be provided.
This has created unnecessary delaying of their office work execution at their level.
The Government usually sanctions Rs 1000-2000 per child in a month to meet the minimum basic requirement or the children is supposed to send at the shelter home.
The district has two recognized shelter home, while many children are dependent to others, some living with nearest relatives as their first guardian (non institutional care) .
Reportedly the DCPU Ukhrul had not allotted any fund for pursuing their official duties and activities for enhancement, they started child mapping yet other activities like organizing awareness camp or physical inspection still in hitherto.
