Imphal, June 30 2014:
A two-day training programme on 'Citrus decline of mandarin Orange in Tamenglong district' was kick-started today at Hotel Imphal here.
Speaking at the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also in charge of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, underscored the importance of training programmes for farmers.
He exhorted the farmers to learn from the training programme and cultivate oranges in Tamenglong district using scientific methods and inputs for better yield.
People have learnt the economic importance of growing orange which once grew in wild.
If orange can be cultivated in all suitable areas of the hill district, the State's economy can gain considerably.
Gaikhangam called upon orange growers to cultivate orange on commercial scale with a vision of exporting their produce outside the State.
Farmers together with experts and Horticulture Department should find out why the orange productivity has declined.
Farmers should never undermine themselves but should harbour a strong sense of dignity of labour.
Many people in the hill areas still remain poverty-stricken even though have land and fields worth crore because they are not laborious enough.
There certainly is a difference between the State's poor and the other States' poor, stated the Deputy Chief Minister.
Noting that orange is the identity of Tamenglong, Gaikhangam called upon orange growers of Tamenglong to work harder so that the oranges they produce can identify Manipur to the outside world.
The inaugural function was also attended by Janghemlung Panmei, Parliamentary Secretary Vungzagin Valte, HAC Vice Chairman Z Kikhonbou Newmai, ADC Tamenglong Chairman Humaliabou and Horticulture and Soil Conservation Principal Secretary JV Ramthanga.
