Seminar on cardiovascular medicine held

The American Heart Association along with eminent cardiologists of India conducted a one-day seminar on cardiovascular medicine at Kolkata on Oct 18 .
The seminar was jointly chaired by the senior cardiologist Dr L Shyamkishore, chief cardiologist, SKY Hospital, Imphal and Dr Santanu Guha, HoD Cardiology, Medical College, Kolkata, informed a statement.
Among others, the seminar adjudicated that Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD), a common cause of death among young people; Stroke and Rheumatic Heart Disease (causing heart valve leak or narrowing) are preventable if public with the help of health care professionals, Govt and NGOs take preventive measures like identifying risk factors for heart attack such as Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, high cholesterol , smoking, obesity, etc and providing timely treatment, the statement said.

Effective use of blood thinning drugs called anticoagulants for patients with Atrial fibrillation will help reduce or prevent ischaemic stroke, the seminar felt.
Improving living condition of poor families, prompt and effective treatment of Group A Streptococcal throat infection in children will help prevent development of Rheumatic Heart Disease in adolescents and adults, the seminar stressed.
