Imphal, July 24 2015 :
With water seeping from Mapithel Dam at different points, people of Tumukhong village and adjoining areas are apprehensive that the dam may collapse any time, and as such they are taking shelter at the nearby hill areas.
According to a press release issued by the JAC Tumukhong, they have already submitted a memorandum to the IFC Minister but no remedial measures have been initiated till date.
Being rainy season the water volume of the dam reservoir is so huge that the dam would not be in a position to hold back the water any longer.
The situation has been aggravated by the closure of the diversion channel.
Reacting to Thoubal Project Division-I Executive Engineer Irom Mohindro's assertion that seepage of water from Mapithel Dam does not pose any risk, the JAC maintained that seepage of water from the dam near the diversion channel is a manifestation of lack of quality.
Taking due consideration of the panicky situation which has gripped Tumukhong and adjoining villages, the authority concerned should take up all possible remedial as well as precautionary measures by July 26 otherwise strong protest movements would be launched against all project related activities, the JAC said.
