CorCom greets on Intl Women's Day

Imphal, March 07 2016: The Coordination Committee (CorCom) has conveyed best greetings to all the people of the land on the occasion of the International Women's Day (March 8) .

The theme for this year's International Women's Day is 'Pledge for parity' and every year the day is observed across the world with the primary agenda of bringing gender equality and emancipate women socially, economically and politically, said CorCom.

However, political structures and economic dynamics which characterised patriarchal societies have not changed to the desired level as yet.

On account of these deep-rooted socio-economic and political systems, women are being segregated and discriminated and they are not entitled to equal rights and opportunities as entitled to men, according to a press release issued by CorCom media coordinator Ksh Yoiheiba.

The ever rising crime rate against women has turned out to be a serious challenge to human civilization and mankind's future.

On the average, 8000 women are killed every year in India for reasons related to dowry.

Meanwhile, cases of violence against women in India has increased from 1.5 lakh to 2.2 lakh in the past 10 years.

Likewise violence against women has been increasing rapidly in Manipur (Kangleipak) too since it was allegedly annexed into the Indian Union.

However, the alien rule has done nothing to check such bestial crimes like rape and murder.

This is understandable as the people of Manipur have been living a wretched life of bondage.

Manipuri women took active roles in many historical events which determined the fate of Manipur.

Manipuri women achieved many feats which their male compatriots could not, CorCom remarked and cited the events of the Seven Years' Devastation, the Nupi Lans of 1904 and 1939 and the Meira Paibi Movement in the contemporary period.

As such, Manipuri women always enjoyed a respectable position in the society.

Apart from fighting repressive measures, Manipuri have been taking leading roles in the struggle against divisive policies of the alien regime.

Manipuri women have been boldly shouldering the dual responsibilities of looking after domestic needs and political challenges of the society.

It is a matter of great concern that the Meira Paibi movement seems to have lost the vision of its goal as many Meira Paibi groups have come under the influence of political leaders.

Defeated in their struggle to earn a square meal a day with decent means, many women have now taken to flesh trade.

This is one factor which has been reinforcing Indian people's attitude of racial discrimination towards people of WESEA.

Rather than resigning to the harsh socio-economic and political conditions imposed upon them as helpless weaklings, Manipur women ought to take pro-active roles in the struggle against the alleged colonial regime, CorCom asserted.

At the same time, it is crucial to liberate Manipur from the alleged 'colonial yoke' if the ideal legacy of Manipuri women should be saved.

The committee further prayed that Manipuri women may take active roles in the struggle to take Manipuri civilization to a higher plane.
