All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union today illuminated its office with lights and burst crackers in joyful acknowledgement of Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution System Ram Vilas Paswan's assurance to fulfill the demands of the union.
Speaking to media persons, M Anil, secretary in- charge of the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union said that the Union, under the aegis of Transporters and Drivers' Council, has been demanding better condition of the National Highways since 2010 .
The transporters have been facing various forms of harassment including extortion from armed militants while on duty along the National Highway 2 (Imphal-Dimapur), he said.
Besides, transporters have remained idle since August last year as an order of the FCI prohibited them from transporting food grains along the Imphal-Jiribam highway, he said.
During the recent two day visit of Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan to the State, representatives of the transporters' union met him at the Raj Bhavan and placed their problems and demands before him, he said.
Their demands were taken seriously by the Minister, he said while also adding that the Minister assured to take up positive actions regarding the demands and also instructed the FCI officials to allow the transporters to transport food grains along the NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam) and to appoint one transport contractor, he said.
He added that the transporters were illuminating the office with lights and bursting crackers from 6 pm today to rejoice the assurance of the Minister and the efforts of MLA Karam Shyam.
