Cycle to save environment

Concerned over the degrading environment and also to promote tourism, the Highland Riders Club (HRC) has laid out a number of awareness programmes to be taken up.
Trekking, meeting villagers and seminars are some of the features of the awareness campaign which will kick-start from next week under the theme, "Be the Change".
According to the HRC, the club members, mostly cycle riders, will set out their campaign from November 5 morning.
The campaign will be flagged off from Kanglatongbi at 6 am by Major General VK Singh, General Officer Commanding, Headquarters 57 Infantry Division.
According to the HRC, they will cover more than 200 kms on challenging mountain terrains cycling and trekking across the hills of Kangpokpi, Senapati and Tamenglong districts.
The Club members said that they will trek to the unique Zaimeng Lake, home to rare Salamander species in Bena (Thonglang), a salt spring, Zaikhun in Makui II and to the lush green Piulong Meadow located near Tamei.
On the fifth day, i.e.November 9, a seminar will be conducted at Tamei in collaboration with the Liangmai Katinah Ruangdi (LNKR) .
"The HRC while taking up the formidable challenges intends to spread awareness to the locals on the prospect of tourism and requirement of creating an eco-friendly environment in the wake of the rampant exploitation of forests and rivers in the region," the Cub said, adding, "This expedition will be the first of its kind in the area with a mission to explore and promote tourism and awareness on environment issue" .
The HRC appealed the people for cooperation especially those living along the Imphal-Tamei Road (IT-Road).
According to the Club, they will be initiating different kinds of programmes in connection with the issue.
However, they are yet to decide the time.
