Imphal, January 03: Call for providing education which can ensure the livelihood of the people reverberated at the 6th foundation day of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) was celebrated today along with participation by students, teachers and representatives of various social organisations at GP Women's College here today.

The foundation day function was attended by titular king of Manipur Leishemba Sanajaoba as chief guest, president in-charge of DESAM PC Newton as functional president and social worker Ningthouja Lancha and former Dean of School of Social Science, Manipur University Prof Kh Bimola as guests of honour.

Giving the key note address of the function, assistant secretary general of DESAM Moirangthem Radhamani noted that since its inception six years back, DESAM has been dedicating itself to the cause of bringing about a change for the better in the education system of Manipur.

The task has been a daunting one since there is good governance in the State, but DESAM would not be disheartened and continue to work hard in this direction, Radhamani said.

He said that the problems plaguing the State today can be solved only when all of its people join hands and work together.

He also called upon all the representatives of the student organisations of the various communities in the region for setting up a common platform.

In his address as chief guest of the function, Leishemba Sanajaoba stressed on the need of all the student bodies and social organisations in the State to work together in the common interest of Manipur and its people.

It is the people of Manipur who are affected the most in the event of any misunderstanding or confrontation among the communities or social organisations, he observed, adding that providing a sound education to the students and to facilitate frequent interaction among the social organisations are essential for solving any problem.

Prof Kh Bimola said 21st century is a knowledge-based society.

So in a State like Manipur where various communities are co-existing together, ensuring every community to procure the knowledge they required would go a long way in promotion of common interest and strengthening unity and integrity of the State.

Ningthouja Lancha said education is closely related to struggle for survival of the people.

It is the failure of providing education which can ensure the livelihood of the people that has led to social disturbances.

The identity of the people would also be lost ultimately if the education cannot ensure their livelihood.

How the people of the area would survive after their land have been submerged under water following construction of Tipaimukh Dam and how the people would be benefited from protection of Loktak Lake from further degradation have to be made part and parcel of the education, he mooted.

Teachers and representatives of various social organisations also spoke at the occasion.

As part of the foundation day function, six selected teachers were also honoured with Chingoo Maichou Khongnangthaba Award, 2007.The awardees are Assistant Teacher of Madhop Sharma H/School M Achouba , Headmaster in-charge of Bishnupur Chingning Primary School Wahengbam Ibohal , Headmaster incharge of Sugnu Jr/High School Thingujam Babu, Headmistress of Uchiwa Jr/High School Mutum Binasakhi, Headmaster of Sorok Atingbi H/School Aheibam Tejmani Singh and Headmistress of Kongpal Junior High School, Porompat Haobam Mema Devi.
