Enrage mob pickets DC Kpi office, demands immediate transfer

Kangpokpi, September 06 2021: The unresolved National Highway expansion issue in Kangpokpi district has landed Deputy Commissioner Kangpokpi in trouble as an enraged mob locked his office and demanded his immediate transfer after a scuffle today at Charhajare.

Various civil society organizations of Kangpokpi district including Kuki Inpi, Sadar Hills Chiefs' Association(SAHILCA), Kuki Women Union, Kuki Students' Organization, Thadou Students' Association, All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union Kalapahar, Kangpokpi Town Committee, Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization, Kangpokpi Youth Union, Asian Highway Land Affected Villages Chiefs/Chairman Association, etc held an emergency meeting at Kangpokpi District Headquarters after the reported Charhajare's scuffle over the alleged high-handedness of the Deputy Commissioner.

During the meeting, representatives from various CSOs poured out their anger and disappointment over the alleged subjugation of the people's rights by the district administrator who even allegedly manhandled one of the Kuki Inpi leaders while his security guards were also alleged to have manhandled the CSOs Kangpokpi spokesperson.

They also alleged that DC Kangpokpi, who had earlier personally claimed to be a powerless DC now personally led the survey and bulldozed the public sentiment despite being fully aware of the situation and issue.

How come a powerless DC became so powerful to personally lead the unacceptable survey and instructed his subordinate officers to execute the work in connection with the highway expansion, wondered the public leaders.

They further alleged that DC Kangpokpi, Somorjit Salam raised his hands and almost slapped one of the Kuki Inpi leaders while his security guards caught the CSOs Spokesperson on his collar.

After a long deliberation, the emergency meeting unanimously decided to picket the office of DC Kangpokpi and lock the premises until he is transferred from the district and subsequently the enraged mob marched towards the office of DC Kangpokpi and picketed the office.

Speaking to media persons, Thangtinlen Haokip, Spokesperson of CSOs Kangpokpi said that a series of meetings with the Government and representatives of the concerned authority was held in the past without any solution, and the matter was put on hold.He continued that the CSOs have requested many times not to go ahead with the survey rather have a meeting at DC's chamber but to no avail and went ahead with the survey with excessive force.

"The bulldozed survey conducted today has been objected by the people and therefore this survey should be null and void", he asserted.

Thangtinlen Haokip continued that the people of Kangpokpi considered the attitude of Somorjit Salam in manhandling the Kuki Inpi leader and CSOs spokesperson very seriously.

It is also a matter of serious concern and a mockery for the bureaucrats of the State that in a democratic country and State, the district administrator neglected the justifiable plea of the public and rather bulldozed their sentiments, he added.

Thangtinlen Haokip further condemned the actions of the DC and demanded his immediate transfer from the district while cautioning the concerned authority for an intensified agitation if the DC is not transferred at the earliest.

Mawinu, president Kuki Women Union Sadar Hills said that Somorjit Salam had been allegedly chased out from Senapati for his unacceptable behaviours but people of Kangpokpi came to his rescue and welcomed him by exhibiting humanity so that he could have another chance to restore his malign image.

"However, he misread our love and humanity by showing his true colour of patronizing the innocent public which we will no more give him space", she added.
