The campaign was inaugurated in 1985 by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

She continued that according to WHO, corneal blindness is a major cause of blindness next to cataract and glaucoma.
Dr M Sokha stated that the District Hospital, Senapati is also planning to open an Eye Care with Operation Theatre and ward very soon.
Dr Pfokreho Pfoze expressed his joy in introducing such facilities to donate the transparent cornea, which is the exterior part, an extension of the brain.
The fragile part of the cornea can be damaged easily if proper care is not taken by anyone.
Some patients are very unfortunate as light has never entered their body.
However, with technological advancements, cornea could be donated to give sight to a blind person.
A cornea could give sight to 3 persons, he added.
