Imphal, December 21 2021: Chief Minister N Biren Singh has stated that the people of the state are filled with enormous talents and added that we need to harness these talents to bring inclusive development in the State.

Biren was speaking at the closing session of the "Two Day Discourse on the Present Status of Manipur Economy: Opportunities and Challenges" held at the Centenary Hall of Manipur University, Canchipur on Tuesday.

Presided over by Economic and Resource Development Organisation president T Sanajaoba, the closing function was attended by Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University Prof N Lokendro Singh as special guest and Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Manipur University head of department Prof E Bijoykumar Singh as guest of honour.

Langthabal AC MLA of Karam Shyam also attended the function as a guest along with distinguished experts and resource persons, scholars and students.

Speaking as chief guest of the function, Biren pointed out that although Manipur is a tiny state, it has topped in MSME business registration among the small states of the country.

More than one lakh individuals are being employed in the MSME sector, he added.

The CM then appreciated the ongoing study oh Act East Policy, stating that the political changes in Myan mar along with improved changes in the trade relation between China and India are hinting towards their enthusiasm to trade.

He then stressed the need to ascertain how the Health for All, Ayushman Bharat, CMHT schemes along with other schemes such as Start-Up have greatly benefited the people.

The SHGs of hill districts are expanding their businesses under TRIFED and around 40000 people are being employed under the Van Dhan Vikas Karyakram of TRIFED.

There is visible positive development in the state in the last four and half years.

The flagship schemes and programmes have been successfully implemented at the grassroots, he conveyed.

Talking about the Atmanirbhar Bharat, the CM stressed that the state government has implemented various welfare schemes towards achieving self-reliance in various sectors such as fishery, etc.

The state is now able to increase the production of fishes to around 6 metric tonnes, reducing the state's earlier import of fishes from 20 metric tonnes to around 13 metric tonnes, he added.

Meanwhile, a drafting committee for formulating an economic policy of the state was formed on the occasion.

Prof E Bijoykumar Singh was appointed as the chairman with ERDO secretary Shanta Nahakpam as convenor.

A total of 10 members have also been appointed to the committee, while senior journalist Pradeep Phanjoubam; SBI Ukhrul Branch manager Dr Meitram Luwang, Babina Group chairman and managing director Dr Th Dhabali; Centre for Entrepreneurship and Skill Development MU director Prof Ch Ibohal and retired IAS officer RK Nimai have been named as consultants.

The key points of the draft will cover review of government programmes, impact of Cbvid-19 pandemic on the state's economy, expansion of animal husbandry and allied activities to increase income of farmers, monitoring of private finance firms, driving the farm economy towards self sustainable modal for generation of capital at the lower level, activities to be undertaken by Directorate of Taxes in line with self-sustainable goals, focusing on skill development alongside an export-oriented market, and grant of loan to small farmers and ventures.

It may be mentioned here that the two-day discourse was organised jointly by Economic and Resource Development Organisation and Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, Manipur University.
