Imphal, April 16 2010:
To extend health care services to the fishermen residing in the floating huts of Loktak lake, operation of two health centres on motor boats has been mooted under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) .
According to an official source, after due consideration of the difficulties faced by these fishermen living in the floating huts of Loktak lake, the State Health Society has sent a proposal to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for the operation of mobile health centre on motorboats under NRHM.
On getting the approval of the Ministry, the State Mission Society of the NRHM would take up necessary steps for inducting two more boats.
The proposed mobile health centres would carry upto 40 to 50 medical personnel including doctors, nurses and technicians, the source conveyed.
In addition to this, another proposal has been placed under NRHM for proper disposal of the solid waste generated by the fishermen living in these floating huts instead of allowing them to dump them into the water, thus resulting in pollution and contamination of the water in the largest fresh water lake in the Northeast India.
The State Health Society has also proposed to the Ministry for procuring five ambulances which would be made operational round the clock in five primary heath centres of the valley districts as well as for inducting specially gearedmobile ambulances in the hill districts and Jiribam, all under the flagship programme of the National Rural Health Mission, the source said further.
