No law to save Shyamkumar: Gaikhangam

Imphal, August 04 2019: MPCC president Gaikhangam has categorically stated that there is no law in the country which can save MAHUD Minister Th Shyamkumar from being disqualified.

Notably, Th Shyamkumar was elected from Andro AC on Congress ticket but he switched allegiance to BJP soon after results of the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly election were declared and became a Minister in the BJP-led coalition Government.

Speaking at a booth level interaction programme of Congress workers held today at Yairipok Tulihal Awang Leikai under the aegis of Andro Block Congress Committee, Gaikhangam urged Congress workers to be prepared for by-election to Andro AC as Th Shyamkumar would be disqualified very soon.

He went on to say that the BJP-led coalition Government was formed fraudulently after violating all established rules and norms.

He remarked that the coalition Government has gone haywire with the ruling MLAs and Ministers not listening to each other.

Even though Congress party emerged as the single largest party after winning 28 seats in the last State Assembly election, the Governor invited BJP to form Government notwithstanding the fact that they won just 21 seats.

But Congress party was never given a chance to prove majority on the floor of the State Assembly.

Thus BJP looted people's mandate from Congress party, said the MPCC president.

In case Congress party comes back to power, the existing anti-defection law would be amended to the effect that defection by MLAs from one party to another is not allowed under any circumstances.

Any MLA who defects to another party would be disqualified automatically and merger of one party with another would not be allowed under the amended law, Gaikhangam asserted.

He said that the series of booth level interaction programmes are aimed at identifying the problems and aspirations of Congress workers working at grassroots level.

The programme is also aimed at strengthening Congress party and enable the party secure 45 seats out of the State's total 60 Assembly seats, Gaikhangam said.

Winning 45 seats is not a very difficult task if Congress workers work collectively with commitment, determination and sincerity, he added.

Among others, MPCC general secretary (administration) Hareswar Goswami and Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee president L Tilotama were also seated on the dais as presidium members.
