16th Shaheed Manoranj an Singh Memorial Football Tournament kicks off

In a stirring celebration of football, National pride and cultural unity, the 16th Shaheed Manoranjan Singh Memorial State Open Football Tournament-2026 was ceremoniously inaugurated today at the Artificial Turf Ground, Takyi, SAI Sports Complex, Imphal, amidst an atmosphere rich with emotion, rhythm and sporting fervour.
The prestigious tournament is being organised under the aegis of the IG M&N Sector, CRPF, by the 86 Battalion, CRPF, Lamphelpat, in close coordination with the All Manipur Football Association (AMFA).
The tournament will run till February 18.The opening ceremony was enlivened by the graceful rhythms of Bihu and the powerful traditional Manipuri martial dance Pung Cholom, whose thunderous drum beats electrified the venue.
In a moment symbolic of National integration, the chief guest was ceremoniously ushered in by vibrant Bhangra performers resonating across the stadium, drawing thunderous applause from the gathering.
The tournament is held annually in revered memory of Shaheed Manoranjan Singh, Assistant Commandant, CRPF a valiant son of Yurembam Makha Leikai, Manipur, who laid down his life in 2009 while fighting Naxalites in Chhattisgarh.
Since 2010, the CRPF has proudly organised this tournament to honour his supreme sacrifice while promoting football culture, discipline, and sporting excellence among the youth of Manipur.
This year's edition features 16 top football teams from across the State, competing on a knock-out basis, promising intense competition, high standards of play and exemplary sportsmanship.
The IG M&N Sector, CRPF graced the opening ceremony along with senior officers and dignitaries from the CRPF, other paramilitary forces, Manipur Police, NHPC, SBI, Sports Authority of India (SAI), AMFA and various civil organisations underscoring the tournament's stature as both a major sporting event and a solemn tribute to National heroes.
The opening match of the tournament saw a keen contest between SU-Sagolband Moirang Leirak and Milan FA, Keibi.
Milan FA however emerged the winners thanks to a solitary goal in the 63rd minute from Takhellambam Lamnganba, who came off the bench after 57 minutes.
To ensure the comfort and hospitality of players, officials, guests and spectators, round-the-clock refreshment and catering arrangements were meticulously organised at the venue.
Hotel Classic, Likla, and the KPKB Canteen provided non-stop catering and fueling facilities, contributing significantly to the seamless conduct of the event.
In keeping with the tournament's stature and commitment to excellence, elaborate medical and emergency response facilities and security arrangements were made.
The event witnessed an enthusiastic and emotionally charged turnout of martyrs' families, CRPF families, sports lovers, and members of the general public, transforming the opening day into a memorable celebration of sport, sacrifice, and solidarity, said Comdt 86 Bn CRPF in a press release.
