Imphal, May 28 2025:
The 27th Meira Paibi Numit was observed in a low-key manner today at Tharo Devi Lampak at Khurai Salanthong.
Organized by the Meira Paibi Numit Observation Committee, the event featured participants paying floral tributes to the Meira Paibi statue.
Addressing the function as chief guest, former Principal of DM College of Arts Prof Dr Ch Shreelaramani said that India's policies and programmes don't align with Manipur's interests as there is no culture of casteism, dowry system, and bonded labor here.
She also highlighted that Manipur society has no tradition or history of begging, as the State historically focused on improving its economy.
Saying that the customs and traditions practiced by 'our ancestors' are disappearing, she said that Manipur today is becoming a State which relies on others for everything.
She starkly contrasted the idea of self-sufficiency with the harsh reality, noting that many Manipuris face food insecurity and homelessness, particularly those displaced by the crisis.
"As Manipuris face one of the gravest crises in its history, it's imperative we reflect on the roles of Meira Paibis," Prof Shreelaramani said.
Saying that the way the Indian Government treats Manipur will never change, no matter which political party is in power, as they allegedly only want to suppress the State, she claimed that AFSPA was imposed in Manipur by treating every inhabitant as a terrorist.
She said that the alleged State terrorism meted out by the Government of India needs to be exposed.
Further alleging that a scheme is underway to dismantle Manipur's agriculture-based economy by targeting the foothill areas to be handed over to big corporations, she said that a unity among the people is paramount to safeguard Manipur and her interests.
She, meanwhile, urged the women present to pass on the legacy of Meira Paibi to the younger generation by educating them about its history and importance.
Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLAMPAM) president Soraisam Memcha said that Meira Paibi Numit is celebrated to pay tribute to the courageous mothers who strived for a fair society, and to continue their legacy.
Meira Paibi Welfare Association Kangleipak (MPWAK) president R Rengsongak Koireng, on the other hand, praised the valour of Meira Paibi, emphasizing that their legacy deserves endless accolades and should be passed down to future generations.
All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) president Y Kunjarani alleged that the Government of India is implementing a policy of divide and rule in Manipur, leading to numerous problems for the State.
The Government of India has been plotting to erode Manipur's integrity, and the Gwaltabi incident is just one instance of this broader agenda, she alleged.
