Imphal, January 22 2026:
The Imphal West District Administration has never granted permission to requests for blocking roads to facilitate the conduct of religious ceremonies related to death, birth, marriage etc .
Even as people seek personal convenience over public inconvenience, there is a need to collectively acknowledge that such acts are a nuisance to commuters, said Imphal West Deputy Commissioner Rajkumar Mayanglambam.
He made the statement at the handing over of a newly constructed wall fencing and drain at Press Colony, Lamphel to All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU).
The structures were funded under Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam's MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) .
The Imphal West DC addressed various initiatives/efforts of the State Government at the event.
Speaking about the Imphal Ring Road Project, M Rajkumar said that in order to secure the necessary lands for the project, officials are currently holding talks with private stakeholders whose land/properties are affected.
Measurement and survey of 10% of the land for this project in Imphal West have been completed and efforts are on to start the project works under PWD .
On another note, M Rajkumar also spoke about unlawful encroachment of Government land in residential areas of Imphal West.
Following representations sent by the concerned clubs, the District Administration has started the eviction process after conducting detailed surveys.
In this regard, he said the public expects the District Administration to remove the illegal structures immediately after submitting their complaints.
However, he explained that eviction is not easy, but requires a long and time consuming step-by-step process.
The Imphal West DC also addressed the project for expansion of National Highway 2, which affects three plots of land.
After a thorough survey, the concerned SDO issued an eviction order.
However, the Manipur High Court stayed the order and as a result, the highway expansion has been temporarily put on hold.
At the event, he also advised street vendors to stop selling their wares on roadsides and urged the public to avoid haphazard and improper parking.
Meanwhile, Asem Bhakta, president, AMWJU, thanked MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam for swiftly proceeding with the construction of the wall fencing and drain after a request was made to him for the same.
Saying that the Press Colony aims to house journalists from far flung areas, he said construction work will begin shortly.
As part of today's ceremony, DC M Rajkumar; Khogendra Khomdram, president, Editors Guild Manipur; Yumnam Rupachandra, secretary, EGM; RK Nimai, retd IAS and AMWJU advisor and other AMWJU officials planted tree saplings at the Press Colony campus.
