Imphal, August 20 2025:
The Meetei Leepun has questioned the Government of India's view and perception of the Meitei/Meetei community and its failure to open highways to the particular community.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, Meetei Leepun Lanchingpurel Heisnam Milan Meetei said that the Central Government and the State's PR administration urged the Liangmai people to call off the bandh imposed in protest against German/Tiger Road after it had completed 21 days.
The PR administration categorically asked the Liangmai leaders to lift the bandh, he said.
However, neither the Central Government nor the PR administration has said anything when the Meetei community has been kept away from National Highways for over two years, Milan said.
With the National Highways kept inaccessible, Meetei people are compelled to spend substantial amounts of money on flight fares whenever they must go outside the State, he said.
He went on to question how the Government of India sees the indigenous Meetei people.
He also asked if there was any hidden agenda behind the UNC's directive which prohibited Nagas from joining the observation of the International Day of World's Indigenous People held at City Convention Centre on August 9 .
Meitei, Tangkhul, Mao, Maram, Poumai, Liangmai, Zeme, Inpui, Kabui, Rongmei and Thangal are all indigenous people of Manipur.
It is a matter of grave concern that all those people who vowed to protect the integrity of Manipur went silent when the UNC prohibited Ashang Kasar from speaking and attending the International Day of World's Indigenous People, Milan said.
He also asked the UNC to come out with a clarification as to why they prohibited Nagas from joining the observation of the International Day of World's Indigenous People.
