Imphal, November 03 2025:
Citing no visible improvement in the condition of displaced persons since the tragic violence began two and a half years ago in Manipur, the World Meetei Council (WMC) has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi's direct intervention to resolve the crisis.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister signed by chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam, WMC stated that over 60,000 people have lost their homes, and more than 260 lives have been lost, despite the deployment of over 60,000 military and paramilitary personnel under the direct command of the Union Government.
However, there has been no visible improvement as thousands of IDPs continue to languish in relief camps, unable to return to their homes and the National Highways remain unsafe and inaccessible to "both the Meetei and Kuki-Zo communities, under the watchful eye of the army and the paramilitary forces and the armed Kuki-Zos", it said.
WMC also noted that some aspects of the Manipur situation were "presented inaccurately" during the Prime Minister's speech in the Rajya Sabha on July 3, 2024 .
It clarified that the eleven instances of President's Rule in Manipur bear no relevance to the current crisis, as it differs significantly in both magnitude and nature from the communal disturbances of the 1990s.Saying that the Prime Minister may have been ill advised, WMC asserted that the applause in the House was, therefore, undeserved.
Reiterating that the Manipur issue is not merely a regional problem, but a National concern demanding the Prime Minister's personal attention and leadership, WMC has sought his direct intervention while highlighting its readiness to extend cooperation and share necessary insights.
