Imphal, September 29 2025:
In a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the World Meetei Council (WMC) has demanded restoration of "Rajdharma" (duty of the king or emperor) by ensuring that Manipur is governed by its own elected representatives without "unwarranted interference from the Centre" .
If the current Assembly is unwilling or incapable of forming a Govt, WMC has urged the Prime Minister to dissolve it and allow the people to elect a new leadership.
The memorandum signed by Heigrujam Nabashyam, chairman, WMC raised a demand to guarantee a responsible and accountable Government that answers to the people of Manipur, "not one imposed or dictated by New Delhi".
As the Prime Minister of India, WMC said that the path of Rajdharma demands him to take decisive responsibility for every State, especially one in turmoil.
However, Manipur has been left to endure a state of abnormal "normalcy" for more than 25 months while the Government of India, under PM Modi's leadership, has chosen to remain an observer.
While appreciating the Prime Minister's recent visit to Manipur, WMC termed it "extremely brief and symbolic" .
It claimed that the Prime Minister had made it clear from his "words and actions so far", that the people of Manipur have been told to handle this crisis on their own, with little accountability or direct responsibility assumed by the Centre.
However, WMC maintained that the current condition of Manipur is not a creation of its people alone but also the outcome of inaction, neglect, and selective engagement by the Union Government.
Highlighting the Council's commitment to peace, it also recalled that WMC had attempted to initiate a dialogue between the Meeteis and the Kuki-Zo community publicly through X (formerly Twitter) on September 14 and 23 but were first met with "hostility" and then "silence" .
Saying that the crisis cannot be brushed aside or allowed to drift further, WMC said that denying the people of Manipur a representative Government is to deny them justice, dignity, and their rightful place within the Indian Union.
"The time for symbolic gestures has long passed.
The people now demand action", concluded WMC .
