Fast track Court sentences rapist to 10 years RI

Imphal, January 29 2024:
A man convicted of committing rape of a minor girl in 2016 has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
The sentence was given by the Fast Track Special Court Number 1 Manipur today.
The man sentenced to undergo 10 years of rigorous imprisonment has been identified as Nameirakpam Premkumar alias Bungcha (32) son of Ningthem of Thinungei Awang Leikai, Bishnupur district.
He was convicted by the same Court on January 18 under Sections 6 and 8 of POCSO Act.
Nameirakpam Prem-kumar committed the crime on December 3, 2016 somewhere in Bishnupur district.
In the Court today, the Special PP submitted that the crime committed by the convict was heinous and prayed for maximum punishment as an exemplary message to the public.
The defence counsel submitted that the convict has no earlier criminal record and is a daily wage earner working as a mechanic in a garage and has a wife and children who depend on him.
The defence counsel prayed for minimum punishment.
After hearing the submissions, the Court sentenced the convict to undergo 3 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 8 of POCSO Act and 10 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 6 of POCSO Act and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 .
The Court ordered that the sentences announced today shall run concurrently and the period which the convict has spent in judicial custody, 1 year and 31 days shall be set off from the jail term.
The Court ordered the State Govt to provide compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the victim's family within one month.
