26th World Sight Day observed in Chandel

The 26th World Sight Day 2025 was observed today at District Hospital Chandel under the theme "Love Your Eyes".
The event aimed to raise awareness about eye health and the prevention of avoidable blindness and visual impairment, was jointly organised by the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI), Manipur, in collaboration with the State Health Society, National Health Mission, District Health Society, Chandel, and the Directorate of Health Services, Manipur.
The function was attended by Dr N Hemantakumar Singh, Director of Health Services, Manipur, as the chief guest; Dr Joyson Mathew Monsang, Chief Medical Officer of Chandel, as the functional president; and Dr Y Premchandra, Joint Director of Health Services, along with Dr Serbum Sakchung, Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Chandel, as the presidium members.
The event began with a welcome and keynote address by Dr Vikram Singh Khoisnam, State Nodal Officer (NPCBVI), who highlighted the global efforts to eliminate preventable blindness and visual impairment.
As part of the observance, a Mega Eye Camp was organised, where 257 patients received free eye examinations.
Among them, 36 cataract and 18 pterygium cases were detected.
A total of 110 spectacles were distributed free of cost to elderly beneficiaries, and all participants received complementary medicines.
The identified cataract and pterygium patients will undergo surgery at the State Ophthalmic Cell, Imphal, on Thursday.
In his address, Dr Hemantakumar Singh urged the gathering to care for and love their eyes by maintaining good eye hygiene and adopting healthy lifestyle practices.
He encouraged people to undergo regular eye check-ups and screening for hypertension and diabetes - the major contributors to visual impairment.
He further announced that a regular ophthalmologist will soon be posted at Chandel District Hospital to strengthen eye care services in the district.
Dr Joyson Mathew in his speech, emphasized the need for a dedicated ophthalmologist and better infrastructure for eye surgeries to provide comprehensive ophthalmic care locally.
Following the event, the Director of Health Services inspected the hospital premises and held a meeting with the district health team to discuss administrative and healthcare-related matters.
