Imphal/Kpi, June 20 2025:
Hundreds of people, family members, relatives and senior officials on Friday bid a tearful farewell to 26-year-old Lamnunthem Sing-son, one of the two Air India crew members from Manipur, who were killed in the horrifying Ahmedabad plane crash on June 12 .
In a moment heavy with sorrow and pride, the town of Kangpokpi laid to rest one of its brightest souls - Lamnunthem Singson.
She was buried with full honour and heartfelt tributes on Friday afternoon at the Kangpokpi Town Cemetery following an emotionally charged farewell ceremony.
The funeral, held at her Ngambom Veng residence, drew thousands of mourners across the Kuki-Zo community.
In her emotional tribute, MLA Nemcha Kipgen hailed Lamnunthem as not just a daughter of Kangpokpi, but a symbol of hope and courage for the entire community.
"Though Lamnunthem lived a short life, she elevated Kangpokpi to a widely identical name on the world map through her supreme sacrifice while serving the country," she said, voice choked with emotion.
"She was more than a victim of tragedy - she was a story of resilience.
Her loss is not just a family's sorrow; it is our collective grief.
To her grieving mother and brothers - your pain is ours, and you are not alone," she added, before gently wrapping a traditional shawl around Lamnunthem's coffin as a final gesture of honour and love.
Rich tributes flowed in from leaders of various civil society organisations, Haipi Baptist Church TBAI, Haipi Village Authority, Ngambom Veng Ward No 8 Committee, friends, and well-wishers.
All remembered Lamnunthem not just as a young professional with dreams, but as a kind-hearted daughter, a Manchester United fan, and a symbol of hope for displaced communities.
Later in the afternoon, Rev Paominlen Kipgen officiated the final rites at the town cemetery, as Lamnunthem's widowed mother, brothers, relatives, and friends wept beside her grave in one of the most heart-breaking moments Kangpokpi has witnessed in recent memory.
As the final prayers were said and the earth embraced her gently, Kangpokpi not only bid farewell to a beloved daughter - it also etched her name forever in its heart and history.
The mortal remains of Lamnunthem arrived in Kangpokpi town late Thursday evening from Ahmedabad via Nagaland's Dimapur airport.
Family sources said that her mortal remains were brought to Kangpokpi, avoiding Imphal, due to the ongoing ethnic tension and security reasons.
On the way from Dimapur to Kangpokpi by road, the convoy halted several times as people and members from organisations, including Kuki and Naga bodies, bid her farewell and paid tribute to the departed soul.
Born on November 13, 1998, Lamnunthem was the only daughter of her widowed mother, Nemneilhing Singson and the third among four siblings.
Her father, Lienminlun Singson, had passed away a few years ago.
Following the ethnic violence that devastated Manipur since May 2023, the family of Lamnunthem, fled their ancestral home in Imphal's Old Lambulane area and have since then lived in a rented house in Kangpokpi district.
Facing immense hardships, Lamnunthem emerged as the family's sole breadwinner.
Her eldest brother, Ngamlienthang, is battling a serious medical condition and is under treatment in Guwahati, while her youngest brother, Lenjathang, is still too young to work.
