MHRC chief notes state of old age homes

Chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Justice UB Saha visited three old age homes today and took stock of the conditions there.
Justice UB Saha accompanied by MHRC member KK Singh, Inspector General of Police Mamata Wahengbam, Inspector of Investigation Division Lokendra Khaidem and Sub-Inspector Loitongbam Petersony Singh visited the old age home cum day care centre at Monsangei, senior citizen's home run by Integrated Rural Development and Educational Organisation, Wangbal and another senior citizen's home run by New Integrated Rural Management Agency, Sangaiyumpham in Thoubal district.
During their visit, the team took stock of the amenities provided at the homes including food, accommodation and healthcare.
At the old age home at Monsangei, the team interacted with the aged inmates.
BK Sarma, secretary of the home informed the MHRC team that the home currently has 15 inmates of which 13 have decided to donate their organs to JN Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) .
BK Singh also informed that he decided to stop taking a grant from the Government as it was extremely difficult to run the home with the money received from the Government earlier.
At Thoubal district, the MHRC team inspected the senior citizen's home run by Integrated Rural Development and Educational Organisation, Wangbal and another senior citizen's home run by New Integrated Rural Management Agency, Sangaiyumpham in Thoubal district.
MHRC team was informed that both the homes have been running with grants from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
One Kh Kumar Singh who runs the Integrated Rural Development and Educational Organisation, Wangbal said that altogether 25 aged inmates are currently staying at his home.
While interacting with some of the inmates, they informed the MHRC that doctors visit them regularly and they are also happy with the facilities being provided to them by the home.
The MHRC team, thereafter, inspected the senior citizen's home run by the New Integrated Rural Management Agency, Sangaiyumpham and found 50 aged inmates staying at the home.
The MHRC Chairperson, however, was not happy with the functioning of the home.
Later in the day, the MHRC team also inspected the women police station in Thoubal and Thoubal police station.
At Thoubal Police Station, Justice Saha was displeased on seeing an FIR registered in 1993 still pending in the police station.
Responding to the media persons, Justice Saha said that SP not assessing the pendency of cases in the police station is apparent.
