Nambul in focus of Save River campaign

As part of its continuous initiative to protect and rejuvenate rivers in the State, the Manipur Government's Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, in collaboration with local communities and other key stakeholders organised a save river campaign under Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 special campaign 5.0 at Nambul Riverfront Garden at Keishamthong today.
In today's campaign, Assistant Prof Dr Likmabam Sanjoy of DM University delivered a talk on why rivers in the State need to be protected.
The campaign to save the rivers was organised as part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign, which began on October 2 and will continue till October 31.The event was jointly organised by Nambul River Development Organisation Sana Janmasthan, Sana Janmasthan Club and Sana Janmasthan Nupi Apunba Lup under the initiative of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change.
Volunteers of Nambul River Development Committee (NRDC), Nambul Kanba Lup Ward number 11& 12 and Nambul River Protection Committee attended the programme.
Dr T Brajakumar, Director of Environment and Climate Change, Executive Engineer of NEID (CWC), Silchar Sakket Kumar, Development Officer of Directorate of Environment Thounaojam Alexander, NEDC president Th Gopimohon and Sana Janmasthan Club president Th Mahendra Pratap were also present during the occasion.
On September 22 and 24, a similar campaign to protect the Nambul River was held at Lairikyengbam Leikai in Imphal East district and Iroisemba in Imphal West in collaboration with the Nambul River Protection Committee.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Brajakumar said that safeguarding the rivers and waterbodies of the State requires the collective effort of the people and the Government.
Attributing climate, change and anthropogenic activities as the contributing factors to the scarcity of water and the pollution of rivers, he appealed to the people not to throw garbage into rivers, turn riverbanks into dumping grounds, or obstruct the flow of water in rivers.
The condition of Nambul River, which is among the most polluted rivers in the region, has somewhat improved due to the collective efforts of the Government and the people, he said and added that the campaign seeks to rekindle collective responsibility and remind citizens of the rivers' vital role in sustaining the State's environment, culture and economy.
