State celebrates World Theatre Day

Manipur joined the global observance of the 63rd World Theatre Day with a state-level celebration organised by the Department of Art and Culture at Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound, Imphal East, on Thursday.
M Joy Singh, special commissioner (Art & Culture), attended as the chief guest and underscored the pivotal role of theatre in society.
He noted that World Theatre Day, initiated by the International Theatre Institute on March 27, 1962, serves to recognise the contributions of professional theatre organisations, artistes, technicians, and designers in preserving and promoting the art of theatre.

"Theatre fosters a culture of peace and plays a significant role in addressing and reflecting on various social issues.
It also serves as a platform for preserving the culture, traditions, and customs of various communities", M Joy said.
K Dinamani Singh, director Art & Culture, highlighted the state's remarkable contributions to art and sports despite its small size.
He reiterated the government's commitment to supporting artistes and referenced the 'Artiste Singgi Tenbang' scheme, which aims to promote the welfare of theatre professionals.
He also addressed the relatively lower popularity of theatre and mime compared to Shumang Leela, advocating for increased public awareness and appreciation of these art forms.
The event featured a special talk on the evolution of mime in Manipur, delivered by Dr Y Sadananda, a Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee and director Kanglei Mime Theatre Repertory.
Additionally, attendees were treated to a theatrical performance titled Tamna Lai, presented by the artistes of Kalakshetra Manipur.
Among the distinguished guests present were G Dharmadas, deputy director Art & Culture, L Johnson Singh, assistant director Art & Culture, along with department officials, renowned artistes, and theatre enthusiasts.
Banian Repertory Theatre, Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapan also celebrated World Theatre Day at MDU hall, Yaiskul Police Lane.
The programme was attended by Manipur Cultural Organisation president Kangjam Radhakumar, art critic Rajmani Ayekpam and Banian Repertory Theatre chairman Meghachandra Kongbam as presidium members.
A play 'Umang Gi Wari', written by Leimapokpam Tikendra and directed by Ksh Phajaton Chanu, was performed by the artistes of Banian Repertory Theatre under Chief Ministergi Artistesinggi Tengbang (CMAT) .
Similarly, Lairenkabi Youth Dramatic Union organised World Theatre Day with its president T Shamu and ex-president N Tombi Singh as presidium members.
