Imphal, September 22 2025:
The Forum for Indigenous Rights Manipur (FIRM), a conglomerate of human rights defenders, has strongly condemned Govt's attempt to evict people of Lei Ingkhol village, Imphal West.
Lei Ingkhol wad founded in the 1940s by socially ostracized Leprosy and Tuberculosis patients and currently inhabited by 759 people who have been living under threat of eviction since 2013 for expansion of the High Court of Manipur complex, said FIRM in a statement.
It refuted the State Government's "strategic use" of the term "encroachers" for the villagers to pave the way for displacing them "without following humanitarian norms" .

Forced displacement of people is a serious violation of the basic rights of Indigenous People-Free and Prior Informed Consent (IPIC) stipulated in the UN Declaration of Rights of the Indigenous People (UNDRIP), 2007, FIRM said.
Further, there has been no arrangement of a proper and spacious location for resettlement to enable the affected villagers to live a dignified life, it said, urging the Government to revoke the policy of "forced displacement" .
FIRM is a conglomerate of human rights defenders of Tamenglong, Noney, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Kamjong, Ukhrul and Senapati districts of Manipur.
