Imphal, April 16 2025:
Condemning the chargesheet against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate allegedly based on false and fabricated charges, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) today marched to the State's ED office located at Sangakpham.
A group of Congress workers led by CLP leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi, MPCC president K Meghachandra, CWC member Gaikhangam, former MP Dr T Meinya and former Minister Moirangthem Hemanta marched to the ED, Imphal sub-zonal office.
They carried banners and festoons which read "Protest against Modi-BJP-Enforcement Directorate political vendetta against Sonia Gandhiji and Rahul Gandhiji", "Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee stands for Sonia Gandhiji and Rahul Gan-dhiji against false Enforcement Directorate case on National Herald", "Protest against political vendetta and intimation by Modi Government against CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition Gandhi and others" etc .
They also shouted many slogans in front of the ED office.
As the Congress leaders and workers tried to move inside the office complex, a large number of security forces blocked their way.
Just outside the ED office, they shouted slogans like "We condemn politicisation of ED by BJP", "We condemn violation of democracy by BJP", "We condemn filing of charge sheet against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi based on false and fabricated charges" "Down, down BJP" etc .
Speaking to media persons, Ibobi said that National Herald is a journal published since the time of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Based on several false charges made by BJP, the ED filed charge sheets against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, he said.
Even though politically influenced ED cannot produce concrete evidence to prove the charges levelled against the Congress leaders, the CLP leader said.
Using the Enforcement Directorate as a political tool, the BJP Government has been intimidating leaders of several Opposition parties so as to silence and suppress them altogether, he said.
Saying that BJP has been defiling the very essence of democracy, Ibobi said that Congress party vehemently condemns such acts of political vendetta being unleashed by BJP .
He stated that ED would not be able to produce any evidence in Court against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
Earlier, ED detained both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and questioned them for several hours.
MPCC president K Meghachandra said that they were protesting as a part of the country-wide protest against the chargesheet filed by ED.
It is a matter of grave concern that the BJP Government has been using ED as a political tool.
Both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are innocent.
Filing chargesheets against them in connection with the National Herald case is unacceptable, Meghachandra said.
Congress party has already clarified that it did not invest any amount in National Herald.
However, even after knowing that the Congress party did not invest any money in National Herald, the ED has filed chargesheets against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
This is a clear case of political vendetta, he said.
By intimidating and persecuting leaders of several political parties, BJP has been challenging the very foundation of democracy, the MPCC president said.
He then urged BJP to stop the politics of vendetta.
