Imphal, August 05 2025:
Moirangthem Asnikumar Singh, former Chairman of Loktak Development Authority and State Spokesperson of BJP Manipur Pradesh, called on Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment Mansukh L Mandaviya at Shram Shakti Bhawan, New Delhi.
In a press release, Asnikumar said that the meeting centered on a proposal to upgrade Takmu Water Sports Complex at Loktak Lake, the Moirang-based complex, into a SAI Centre of Excellence in Water Sports.
The complex, constructed during the 5th National Games in Imphal in 1999, has produced over 300 National and international-level athletes in rowing, canoeing, and kayaking, despite its dilapidated infrastructure and lack of modem equipment, he said and added that this achievement demonstrates the facility's potential to serve as a National hub for water sports training.
Asnikumar recalled the Minister's assurance of support during his visit to Loktak Lake in August 2024 and submitted a detailed proposal, supported by a feasibility study conducted by SAI NERC Imphal, he said and added that the study confirmed the site's suitability for hosting National and international water sports events, given its abundant land, water resources, and ideal geographic location.
Asnikumar emphasized that upgrading the complex would enhance sports infrastructure, promote sports tourism, generate local employment, and decentralize sports development efforts.
He highlighted the immense potential of Manipur's youth and the need for a suitable platform for them to excel.
Furthermore, Asnikumar underscored the critical role the Centre can play in combating drug abuse and anti-social activities among the youth in the region.
"Sports instils discipline, purpose, and resilience - qualities our youth need now more than ever," he said.
The proposal seeks the inclusion of rowing, canoeing, and kayaking under the SAI scheme and recognition of Takmu Water Sports Complex as a SAI Centre of Excellence in Water Sports, he said and added that Mandaviya gave a patient hearing and assured that the matter would be considered with due priority.
Later that evening, Asnikumar called on Hari Ranjan Rao, IAS, Secretary (Sports) cum Director General, Sport Authority of India (SAI), at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi, to discuss the potential of sports in Manipur and seek maximum assistance from the Government of India.
