Students of Government Polytechnic College, Imphal have threatened to shut down the institution if the Governor and other authority concerned fail to address the shortage of manpower, including teaching and non-teaching staff by September 8.In this connection, the Government Polytechnic located at Takyelpat demanding immediate action to save the only Students' Union staged a sit-in protest today at the campus of the institution Government Polytechnic College in the State.
The protesting students wielded placards with messages such as "Don't play with students' future, fill the vacancies", "No more excuses, appoint teachers now", "Appoint necessary teaching and non-teaching staff, "Address all education related issues" etc .
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Yenkhulun Gonmei, a student from the Civil Department said that the College is grossly short-staffed with only 21 teachers present against the required 60.Evidencing this shortage, the College only has 3 lecturers teaching D Pharma (Diploma in Pharmacy) instead of the required 7 .
Meanwhile the Civil Department has no Mathematics or Physics teacher.
As a result, they are unable to conduct regular classes and have put the future of students' in jeopardy, he maintained.
Addressing the shortage of non-teaching staff, Yenkhulun Gonmei said that the College does not have enough laboratory instructors.
As technical students, laboratory classes are crucial.
However, due to the shortage of laboratory instructors, students are unable to do the necessary lab work properly.
Expensive lab equipment remains unused gathering dust.
The situation has reached such a stage where students have started questioning their decision to enrol in the College, he said.
On the other hand, laboratory equipment have started going missing due to the absence of dedicated watchmen/security guards.
Without anyone to safeguard the College campus, it has become a place for outsiders to abuse narcotic substances in the evenings and nights.
Students have found many traces of such drug use within the campus, said Gonmei.
In addition, vehicles of students and teachers alike have been stolen from the campus.
Under such circumstances, he has urged the Governor and relevant authority to address the shortcomings at the College by September 8, otherwise the students are prepared to launch intense forms of agitation including complete shutdown of the Government Polytechnic.
