Steps taken to recruit 25 Guest Lecturers at Govt Polytechnic

The Department of Higher and Technical Education has taken steps to recruit 25 Guest Lecturers to fill vacancies in the Government Polytechnic, Takyel.
This was revealed in a report the Joint Secretary, Higher and Technical Education submitted to the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on September 16.The report was submitted to the MHRC after it took a suo-moto cognizance of a report published by The Sangai Express highlighting severe shortage of teachers at the Government Polytechnic, Takyel.
Taking up the case, the MHRC had noted that the Government Polytechnic had only 21 teachers against a requirement of 60 with serious vacancies in critical departments.
The commission had also noted that the college campus security was inadequate with multiple theft cases registered, and portions of the Girls' Hostel ceiling had collapsed, injuring several students without any remedial action taken.
After an inspection confirming the problems, the MHRC had then directed the Principal Secretary/Commissioner, Higher Education to submit a status report on the vacant posts by September 18.Taking note of the theft cases, it had also directed the Superintendent of Police, Imphal West and Officer-in-Charge of Lamphel police station to file a report on investigations into the cases by September 18.During the hearing on September 16, the Joint Secretary, Higher & Technical Education submitted its report stating that the Department has taken steps for engagement of 25 Guest Lecturers for different subjects to fill up the shortage of teaching faculties in Government Polytechnic, Takyel.
Moreover, the Department is also examining the proposal for engagement of non-teaching faculties in consultation with the Controller of Technical Education, Manipur, submitted the Joint Secretary.
For immediate action to resolve the different issues of the Government Polytechnic, a meeting was also convened under the chairmanship of Commissioner (Higher & Technical Education), Government of Manipur on September 16, said the report of the Joint Secretary.
After examining the report, K Khagendra, Acting Chairperson of the MHRC directed the Joint Secretary, Higher & Technical Education to further submit an action taken report, if any, on the next date of hearing on October 10.On the other hand, the MHRC noted that the Superintendent of Police, Imphal West and Officer-in-Charge, Lamphel police station "failed" to submit any report regarding reported cases of thefts in the Government Polytechnic.
It then directed the SP Imphal West and OC Lamphel police to file a status report of the investigation on or before October 10 without fail.
