Imphal, May 16 2026:
The Kangleipak Students' Association (KSA) has pointed out several errors and misleading information about Manipur's history in an NCERT textbook titled "North East India-People, History and Culture" .
The NCERT's textbook which has a chapter "Manipur-Jewel of India" has several information which are factually incorrect and misleading, it said.
The chapter wrongly describes several important historical milestones, it said.
Firstly, the chapter contains misleading and distorted facts about Manipur's merger with the Union of India, KSA said.
The chapter has wrongly described that Manipur's merger with India was done in accordance with the Manipur Constitution Act, 1947, KSA said.
Manipur had its own Constitution before the merger with India.
The merger with India was signed 'forcibly' after Maharaja Bodhchandra was called in Shillong in 1949, KSA said.
About the Indian National Army (INA), it wrongly describes Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose as the person who hoisted and unfurled the National flag on April 14, 1944 at Moirang.
In fact, there is no historical record about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose visiting Manipur, and the flag which was hoisted at Moirang was not the National flag, said KSA.
The flag which was hoisted at Moirang on April 14, 1944 was the INA's flag which had the Springing Tiger as the emblem.
And, it was INA's Colonel Shaukat Ali who unfurled it, said KSA .
Thirdly, the Manipur State tree has been wrongly described as "Toon" in the chapter when the actual State tree is "Uningthou", KSA said.
Further, the chapter has wrongly described that Bir Tikendrajit was hanged on May 23 and the day (May 23) is observed in Manipur as the Patriots' Day, said KSA .
Bir Tikendrajit was hanged by the British on August 13, 1891, and August 13 is observed as Patriots' Day in Manipur every year, KSA added.
Denouncing the errors in the textbook as "very unfortunate" and "misleading", KSA said the NCERT and the authorities concerned should immediately review and make necessary corrections before suggesting it to students.
