Imphal, April 15 2025:
Accusing the BJP of actively indulging in communal politics, former Chief Minister and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Okram Ibobi has questioned BJP's commitment to uphold the Constitution and protect minorities.
The CLP leader was speaking at the 135th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar, the father of Indian Constitution held at Congress Bhavan here on Monday under the aegis of MPCC.
Ibobi recalled that BR Ambedkar took the most pivotal role in drafting the Indian Constitution after the end of British colonialism.
He was the Chairman of the Constitution drafting committee, Ibobi said.
Taking serious note of the fact that India is home to several religions, sects and ethnicities, BR Ambedkar drafted the Constitution in such a manner that all can live together in peace and harmony.
Acknowledging his immense contribution in drafting the Indian Constitution which is secular in character and spirit, the CLP leader said that the people of the country lovingly call BR Ambedkar Father of Indian Constitution.
The Indian Constitution is one of the most voluminous Constitutions in the world and it provides sufficient safeguards for the rights of minorities, Ibobi said.
He said that it is BR Ambedkar's Constitution which is keeping India united.
The Indian Constitution has been amended from time to time but it seems that the incumbent BJP Government has been deliberately targeting minority communities.
The BJP Government has been interfering in the religious affairs of minorities, he said.
The Waqf Amendment Act passed in the Parliament recently deliberately attacked a particular minority community/religion.
As such, the Congress party raised a strong objection when the Bill was discussed in the Parliament, Ibobi continued.
Although the Waqf Amendment Act was passed in the Parliament, the Congress party has filed a petition against the same Act in the Supreme Court, the CLP leader said.
He said that Waqf Amendment Act 2025 challenges the Constitution of India and this is the premise of the Congress party's petition filed at the Supreme Court.
MPCC president K Meghachandra, CWC member Gaikhangam, ex-Minis- ters, ex-MLAs and leaders of different Congress cells were also present at the event.
