Shirui Lily Fest to promote sustainable eco-tourism: Pooja Elangbam

The 5th edition of the Shirui Lily Festival will focus on promoting sustainable eco-tourism for preserving the rare and endangered State flowers, State Tourism Director, Pooja Elangbam said while inspecting the scheduled venues of the festival at Ukhrul today.
A team of State officials including Pooja Elangbam, led by Secretary of Tourism, Worshang Hungyo, who is also the convener of the organising committee of the festival, inspected ongoing preparations for the festival at Vangayan Shirui village, Bakshi ground and the district headquarters ground.
During the inspection, Pooja Elangbam expressed satisfaction that about 70 percent of the work has been completed.
The preparation for the grand festival will be accelerated and completed within the next few days, she said.
Briefing the media about the ongoing preparations for the festival, Pooja stated that the parking site for the opening ceremony has been blacktopped, and separate entry and exit points have been installed for the venue.
The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and the Public Works Department (PWD) are working on a war footing to blacktop the highway to ensure uninterrupted traffic flow, she added.
Pooja noted that the Tourism Department is fully co-ordinating with the district administration to make the festival a grand success.
The 5-day festival will witness a myriad of cultural shows, Shirock/musical shows, dance shows, trekking activities, a beauty pageant and many more exciting events--aimed at promoting tourism.
While promoting tourism, the main objective of the festival is to preserve the abode of the Shirui Lily and the flower.
The festival will benefit the district and Manipur as a whole, and help improve the local economy, Pooja said.
The festival will raise; awareness and encourage' people to conserve the environment and culture.
Promoting sustainable tourism is the focus, she added.
To promote cleanliness and health, adequate dustbins and toilets will be installed at all venues and along the Imphal-Ukhrul Highway.
There will be regular collection of garbage, she informed.
Pooja appealed to the people of Ukhrul district to give best support and contribute in making the festival grand and meaningful.
The visiting team interacted with Ukhrul Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, District Level Officers, members of civil society organisations and representatives of villages of Ukhrul.
