Imphal, January 09 2024:
The new generations should be groomed to instill in them love for the motherland and values that will enable them to live in harmony and codependent with others.
They should be instilled with values that will enable them to lead and unite all, said RK Meghen.
He was speaking on the 190th death anniversary of Maharaja Gambhir Singh observed at Langthabal, Canchipur.
He paid floral tributes at the memorial site of Maharaja Gambhir Singh.
The observance was organised by the Manipur State Archeology.
The former rebel leader attended the observance after Chief Minister N Biren Singh, his Council of Ministers and MLAs had departed the venue.
At the observance, Meghen acknowledged Manipur Youth League's initiatives and the movement it has launched for Manipur.
"A youths' movement for Manipur has been started by a Lup called Manipur Youth League (MAYOL) bringing messages for change," he said.
Meghen was referring to MAYOL's "Long March for National Regeneration" it launched on December 20, 2023.The march reached several districts before winding up today at Manipur University.
MAYOL had said that the Long March's objectives were to start a revolutionary movement for national Regeneration, protect identities of all indigenous communities, uniform development and harmonious coexistence.
Speaking on the occasion, Meghen said Maharaja Gambhir Singh died on this day in 1831 .
Maharaja Gambhir Singh along with Nara Singh and Sana Herachandra, with the help of the British, ended the Seven Years' Devastation.
They drove away Awa (Burma) beyond the shores of Ningthi River.
Taking advantage of the help it provided, the British then began interfering in the affairs of Manipur.
Without the knowledge of the King, the British secretly signed a deal with the Awa (Burma) to give it Kabaw Valley on lease.
This saddened and affected Maharaja Gambhir Singh and he died of a stroke, said Meghen.
After Manipur repelled Awa, from 1826 to 1891, Manipur became a 'semi-colony' of the British when she was seen as an independent State on the outside.
After the 1891 Anglo Manipur War, Manipur became a British colony.
The British left Manipur as an independent State in 1947 .
Manipur, during and after the immediate end of British rule was in chaos with forces threatening the social identity.
To avoid history repeating itself, and end the chaos in the State and curb threats to social identity, new generations should be instilled with values and discipline.
The new generations should be groomed to instill in them love for motherland and values that will enable them to live in harmony and codependent with others.
They should be instilled with values that will enable them to unite all, he said.
