Suspects held in death of man

Imphal, March 07 2024: Singjamei police have arrested at least two persons over the death of a differently abled person who was found grievously injured at his own house and died on the way to a hospital last night.

The deceased has been identified as Nongthombam Ingocha (55) of Langthabal Lep Mayai Leikai.

The two persons arrested are also from the same locality and they are Koijam Rishikanta (49), s/o Imo and Pukhrambam Robert (44), s/o Manao.

Family members of the deceased said that Rishikanta and Robert were seen going inside the residence of Ingocha and Ingocha was later found grievously injured at his own house.

Speaking to the media near RIMS morgue today, family members of the deceased said that Ingocha stayed alone.

Saying that one of the neighbours went to the residence of Ingocha at around 4 pm as the latter didn't come out like usual and found him grievously injured, the family members continued that Ingocha was declared brought dead by the doctors at Raj Medicity.

Reportedly, the family members lodged a complaint at Singjamei police station last night, following which an inquest was conducted in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and later the corpse was deposited at RIMS morgue.

The police raided the houses of the prime suspects Rishikanta and Robert during the investigation and arrested them.

Sources said that Rishikanta and Robert have accepted the charges levelled against them, apart from disclosing that they regularly played cards at the house of the deceased.

According to sources, the two accused along with another person went to the residence of Ingocha drunk at around 1 pm to play cards and found the house owner sleeping.

Saying that a heated argument broke out between Rishikanta and Ingocha after the former pulled the blanket of the house owner, the sources continued that Rishikanta beat Ingocha badly.

The two accused persons have been sent to six day police custody by Imphal West Duty Magistrate.

Meanwhile, a JAC formed in connection with the death of Ingocha has adopted a resolution to ostracise all the accused involved in the incident from Langthabal Lep and Langthabal Mantrikhong areas.
