Honouring the victims of the world's first nuclear bombing, Indo Japan Friendship Association of Manipur (IJFAM) observed the 80th Hiroshima Day at Loktak Hall of Manipur Press Club today.
The event was graced by Kh Ibomcha, MLA, Lamlai AC as the chief guest; Ningthoujam Kumar Meetei, vice-president, IJFAM as the functional president and Sarangthem Manaobi, retd IPS and Dr Ksh Subadani, Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar Awardee as the guests of honour.
Speaking as the chief guest, Kh Ibomcha said that Hiroshima Day carries the message of creating a peaceful, nuclear-free world and spread awareness about the damages of war to humanity.
Aside from the immediate effects, the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings subjected survivors to long-term health complications including various forms of cancers, said Kh Ibomcha.
He also expressed apprehension about the fate of humanity and all living beings considering the proliferation of nuclear weapons and armaments in the world.
Addressing the protracted Manipur conflict, he said that daily gunfights are no longer the norm, however the crisis has not been resolved.
People cannot travel freely and more than 60,000 IDPs are still living in relief camps.
Saying that the Central Government is taking steps to stop the violence and unrest in Manipur, the Lamlai AC MLA pointed out that it is crucial to rehabilitate and rebuild the lives of violence affected people in the hills and valley to return to normalcy.
He urged people to cooperate with the Indian Government and take individual responsibility to bring peace in Manipur.
