COCOMI carries forward aid and relief efforts

The Flood Relief and Emergency Helpline unit of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) continued its aid and relief work to alleviate the hardships faced by residents of localities affected by the flood in Imphal.
As a part of the COCOMI's effort, a team led by the committee convenor and the convenor of the women's wing visited and extended a wide range of relief items to the residents of Khurai Heikrumakhong who have been badly affected owing to the breaching of the bank of Imphal river along the area.
As per a press release issued by the committee, plates, bowls, shoes, sandals, mosquito nets, eatables, body soaps, drinking water (bottles) were handed over to the residents of the affected locality today in addition to rice, dal, edible oil, salt and onion extended yesterday.
The team also came to know that, except for some edible items dispatched to the relief camp opened for the affected families, no Government officials concerned had visited the locality and taken stock of the situation there.
In light of the situation, the team communicated with the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East via telephone and urged the office to take up necessary measures including installation of temporary shelter and arrangement for basic amenities on war footing, it said.
Based on the reports received from the survey team of the committee, the committee also visited and aided essential items to flood victims of 13 localities, it said.
As per the release, 155 families sheltering at Bashikhong Panthoibi Relief Camp and nearby camps; 150 families of Kongba Irong; 14 families of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai; 60 residents of Soibam Leikai through Soibam Leikai Citizen Club; 50 families of Kongpal through Kongpal Social Development Organisation cum Youth Centre; 56 families of Kongpal Khaidem Leikai; 10 families of Kongpal Eranpham; 46 families of Uchekon; 20 families through Uchekon Naharol Lamyan Club; 11 families of Kongpal Kongkham Leikai; 46 families through Uchekon Youth Unity Club; 15 families (tribal) taking shelter at ISBT Dewlahland Relief Camp; and 21 families through Wangkhei NSK Club were reached out with aid and potable water, it said.
COCOMI further appealed to all sections of the society who were not affected by the recent flood to voluntarily come out and bolster the aid and relief efforts and help flood victims meet the basic amenities.
The committee also drew the attention of the district administration to work out a special and inclusive scheme to sanitize water, arrangement for medical aid, potable water, disinfectant solution and mosquito nets for badly affected victims.
Furthermore, COCOMI urged the district disaster relief team concerned to survey and identify problems faced by localities currently reeling under the flood situation.
Considering the hardships faced by women amidst flood, the committee will also launch a special campaign of distributing sanitary pads in association with Social Welfare and Health Department through local self help groups and Village Level Federations (VLF), it said.
The committee will carry forward possible forms of relief work and help organise medical camps until the draining work in waterlogged localities are completed, it added.
