Imphal, May 05 2025:
Keeping an eye on the next Manipur Legislative Assembly election which is due in 2027, Congress party is determined to strengthen its support base in minority-inhabited areas of the State.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan, BT Road here today, AICC Minority Department National Coordinator and Manipur in-charge Rajesh Kumar Sethi said that the Congress party has been working to strengthen its support base in Assembly Constituencies predominantly inhabited by minorities.
Public meetings of minority communities were held recently at Moirang and Mayang Imphal and the meetings resolved to strengthen the Congress party.
The party has also been working to enhance its support base in all the 20 hill Assembly Constituencies, Rajesh Kumar Sethi said.
He said that the party has set a target of securing 15 of the 20 hill Assembly segments in the next State Assembly election.
The Congress party is also eyeing the valley Assembly seats where minorities have large presence so that the party can form the next Government in the State, Rajesh Kumar Sethi said.
He accused the BJP Government of discriminating and suppressing the minorities.
On the other hand, the Congress party has been protesting relentlessly across the country against the Waqf Amendment Act, he said.
AICC Minority Department Chairman and Rajya Sabha Member Imran Pratapgarhi has already filed a petition at the Supreme Court challenging several provisions of the Waqf Amendment Act, he said.
On the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 in which 28 people were killed, Rajesh Kumar Sethi said that there were security lapses.
Instead of showing solidarity to the victims and visiting their families.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is busy addressing election rallies in Bihar, he said.
It is a matter of grave concern that Narendra Modi does not bother to visit even for a single day even as Manipur has been literally burning for the past two years, he decried.
Even today, the Prime Minister has not taken up a single tangible step to bring an end to the Manipur crisis and restore peace in the State, he said.
At first, people hoped that the President's Rule would bring peace and normalcy but after almost three months all the people's hopes have been belied, he remarked.
He maintained that the Centre should either re-install a popular Government in Manipur at the earliest or hold fresh elections.
MPCC Minority Department Chairman Md Zakir Hussain and MPCC General Secretary (Organisation) Md Amir Hussain were also present at the press meet.
