Quiz, painting competitions mark 166th Income Tax Day celebration

Joining the rest of the country, Income Tax Office Imphal celebrated 166th Income Tax Day today by organising quiz and thematic painting competitions at GP Women's College, Imphal.
The thematic painting competition was conducted in two categories- Category A for Classes VIII to X and Category B for Classes XI and XII .
A total of 7 teams (3 students each) participated in the quiz competition while about 60 students participated in the painting competition.
Speaking on the occasion, Haridas Rajkumar, Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Imphal-Circle, said that Income Tax Day is celebrated every year on July 24 to commemorate the introduction of income tax by Sir James Wilson in 1860, a significant turning point in India's fiscal history.
He asserted that the Day commemorates the evolution of India's tax administration and showcases the Government's ongoing efforts to build a streamlined and citizen-centric system.
He continued that the quiz and painting competitions were organised to make the students aware about the crucial role income tax plays in nation-building.
"There are two types of taxes in India- direct tax and indirect tax.
Direct taxes are paid directly to the Government while indirect taxes are collected by intermediaries.
Direct taxes include income tax, STT, and capital gains tax.
Indirect taxes include GST, VAT, and customs duty", added Haridas.
Winners of the thematic painting competition in the order of merit are:
Category A- Kelvin Elangbam of Pitambara English School, Nongthombam Nelson Singh of Sainik School and Heigrujam Kartina Devi of Tekcham High School.
Category B- Artina Chingtham of Fancier Higher Secondary School, Konsan Roshan of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and Waikhom Abhinash Singh of Fancier Higher Secondary School.
Winners of the quiz competition in the order of merit are - Yumnam Tonthinganbi, Waikhom Gabriela Devi and Khangjrakpam Panthoisana of TG Higher Secondary School; Prince Raj, Naitik Raj and Heikrujam Bradley of Sainik School Imphal; and Thokchom Nongpoknganbi Meetei, Ajit Singh and Twahaa Khan of Bhaktivedanta Institute Mission Higher Secondary School, Imphal.
