Bishnupur, July 28 2025:
The family of Moirangthem Ranjit (40) of Nambol Kongkham Mayai Leikai, who passed away at Asian Hospital, Kwakeithel, on July 26 following surgery, has alleged that his death was a result of medical negligence.
Speaking to media persons at Nambol on Monday, Ranjit's younger brother Premkumar, claimed that the hospital authorities were attempting to mislead the public through their statements on the incident.
Ranjit sustained injuries in a road accident on July 24 in Nambol area and initially treated at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Nambol, where he was advised to seek further treatment at JNIMS or RIMS.
However, the family decided to admit him to Asian Hospital considering its proximity.
Premkumar alleged that although his brother underwent a CT scan and MRI on admission, there were not enough doctors available at the hospital.
Despite the limited staff and his brother's complaints of abdominal pain, the hospital neither referred him to a higher centre nor provided proper care.
Doctors reportedly diagnosed a facial fracture and dismissed any major concern at the time.
Subsequently, Ranjit's abdomen started swelling, prompting a full-body examination.
Doctors decided to operate on July 25, but the surgery was only carried out around 6 pm.
After the procedure, hospital staff informed the family that his condition was not serious and involved only some infection.
Premkumar recounted that when he visited his brother post-surgery, Ranjit was having difficulty breathing.
Despite requesting oxygen and ventilator support, the paramedical staff reportedly told him that such measures require doctor's consultation.
He was instructed to return during the next day's visiting hours.
When he returned at 4 pm, he was informed by the doctor that his brother had passed away.
Premkumar further alleged that the hospital initially demanded payment of Rs 60,000 to release the body.
The amount was later reduced to Rs 30,000, then to Rs 17,000 and finally the hospital allowed the body to be taken without any payment.
He also said that the hospital did not permit the family to meet the attending doctor after the death, which, according to him, further points to negligence.
A Joint Action Committee (JAC), has been formed in connection with the incident and the family has pledged full support to the JAC's actions and demands, he added.
