AR seizes areca nuts, timber worth ₹163 cr

Imphal, March 19 2024:
Assam Rifles intercepted 139 Indian trucks involved in illegal transportation of areca nuts and timber worth approximately Rs 163.88 crore in total during an operation launched in the region of Kangpat Centre and Kangpat Khunou of Kamjong district.
In a release, PRO IGAR (S) informed that the operations led to confiscation of substantial quantity of dumped areca nuts and timber in the vicinity of the said region, which are suspected to be intended for unauthorised distribution in the black market.
Upon thorough inspection, the search operation resulted in the seizure of 15,230 bags of areca nuts weighing approximately 1321.62 tonnes which is valued around Rs 159 crore and 50,603 CFT of timber worth Rs 4.88 crore, the PRO informed, adding that the confiscated goods have been handed over to the forest beat officer of Kamjong district.
