Imphal, February 09 2016:
The Mani-pur University Tribal Students' Union (MUTSU) has deman-ded removal of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor Prof H Nandakumar Sharma.
The union staged a sit-in-protest at MU campus pressing for the same demand today.
Speaking to reporters, MUTSU president Bosco Jaiche Kharam alleged that there was favouritism in the appointment of the Co-ordi-nator of the Centre for Human Rights and Duties Education.
Moreover, reservation guideline was flouted in PhD admission and ST hostel has not been opened till date, he said.
The former Co-ordinator was allowed to work as the Co-ordinator of the Centre for Human Rights and Duties Education for more than four years in clear violation of the rules of the varsity.
The Co-ordinator was supposed to change on rotational basis among senior most tea-ching staff after every three years, he said.
Bosco further said that Dr Gaikhamsin Riamei was ultimately appointed as the Co-ordinator of the Centre on June 8, 2015 .
However, when he took over the charge, many illegal and destructive activities were systematically carried out by anti-social elements with the tacit support of the University authority causing dama- ges to the properties of the Centre and creating psychological and mental torture to him, Bosco alleged.
He further said that the University authority did not take any action against the culprits despite repeated requests.
Instead of handing over the power and functions to Dr Gaikhamsin, the University authority issued an order to allow the former Co-ordinator to function as the Co-ordinator of the Centre, he said.
Such discriminatory attitude and lack of transparency of the University authority would lead to dissension between different communities at the campus, he said.
Saying that the protest was staged to press the varsity authority to rectify such mistakes, Bosco sought support and co-operations from different student unions.
The protesters held placards that read, 'Stop racial discrimination', 'Where is tribal hostel', 'Stop communal politics', 'No favouritism in MU', and 'We seek truth and justice' .
