Imphal, July 06 2026:
Even though a blockade at Sejhang village area in Kangpokpi district halted traffic on National Highway-37 for some time, as many as 567 loaded vehicles including tankers carrying fuel reached Imphal late this evening.
The blockade was enforced by locals of Sehjang village and neighbouring areas in response to the attack on Thingkhongjang village yesterday which hurt a woman and a child.
Sources said protesters blocked the road placing benches as obstacles and checked the identity, Aadhaar cards of drivers.
Security forces initially failed in their attempts to disperse the protesters and open the highway.
Later, officials of the CRPF and State police talked to the protesters and managed to open the road to traffic.
While 567 goods laden vehicles reached Imphal in the evening, another convoy of security forces escorting around 450 trucks and tankers have left Jiribam for Imphal, said Transporters' and Drivers' Council (TDC) president Hijam Ranjit.
Ranjit also informed that the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has resumed repairing work on the NH-37.The NHIDCL had briefly halted the work recently.
Appreciating the NHIDCL, Ranjit said the company has deployed machinery at several damaged stretches and resumed repair work.
He said a severely damaged section near Irang bridge has been repaired.
While acknowledging the efforts being put in by the NHIDCL, Ranjit also urged the company to adopt long term measures to make the road last longer.
Emergency and short term measures will only cause drivers and commuters to face recurring problems.
The NHIDCL should deploy adequate machinery and manpower to repair the road and the drainages.
Fixing only the road without clearing the clogged drainages could damage the road again during rainfall, Ranjit said.
Most importantly, the NH-37 must be repaired to make it a 2-lane road for vehicles to commute easily and save travel time, he said.
The Imphal-Jiribam road must be repaired and improved meeting all the required specifications of a National Highway, he added.
