Senapati, September 03 2025:
The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced a "trade embargo in Naga areas" under its jurisdiction, effective from midnight on September 8, 2025, until further notice.
This decision follows the failure of the talk between the UNC-led Naga organizations and the Government of India on the issues surrounding the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border on August 26 in Delhi.
The UNC stated that despite the Naga people peacefully expressing their opposition to the FMR and border fencing construction through various democratic means since Jan 19, 2024, the Govt's indifference warrants a stronger protest.
The UNC emphasized that the Naga people's stance against scrapping FMR and border fencing construction remains firm, as these measures threaten their homeland, identity, and inherent rights over their land.
Saying that the decision to enforce trade embargo was taken during the 'presidential council meeting' held on August 11, 2025, the UNC sought cooperation from all the Naga people and public of the State.
The UNC stated, "To all the Naga people in Manipur and Naga brethren without borders, we seek your utmost cooperation and solidarity towards this movement of the Naga conscience for restoring our rights, culture, traditional ties and fight for a dignified future of Naga peoples" .
The UNC also requested "kind cooperation" and understanding from all concerned and the general public of the State.
Mention may be made here that the eleven-member Naga team had held a talk with eight-member Government of India representatives at 20, Subramanyam Bharati Marg near Navyug School Pandara Park in Delhi on August 26 but it ended in a deadlock.
According to the UNC leaders regarding the August 26 talk, they had told Government of India representatives that whatever may be the case if the dialogue was to continue the ongoing construction works of border fencing should be kept on hold.
"But the Government of India representatives were adamant that the construction works of the border fencing cannot be halted", a UNC leader said.
"As such is the stand of the Government of India, how can the talk be continued?" he added.
The present executives of UNC and three former UNC presidents (members of UNC Working Committee), leaders of Naga Women Union (NWU) and All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) comprised the Naga team for the talk on August 26 .
The United Naga Council had served a 20-day ultimatum to the government on July 22.The ultimatum period had lapsed on August 11 .
