Imphal, September 02 2025:
Sixteen civil society organisations and "Ima Lups" have written to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla appealing for protection of land rights, prevention of displacement and justice for the people of Lei Ingkhol village.
According to the joint representation, the village community has allegedly been facing an ongoing threat since 2005 due to the allotment of nearly 21 acres of land to the High Court of Manipur Complex by the Government "without proper consultation or consent from the villagers".
Saying that families here live with the constant fear of losing their homes, the CSOs have urged the Governor to preserve the current status of Lei Ingkhol village and return the 21 acres of land to the village people.
It further sought the assistance of the Governor's office in ensuring that the villagers obtain formal, legal entitlement to their land which will protect them from any future threats of eviction or dispossession.
Additionally, the representation called for a transparent and fair review of the plans to expand the High Court in consultation with the Lei Ingkhol villagers.
"If relocation is unavoidable, they must be provided with better, acceptable living conditions and compensation that truly address their needs", it added.
Underscoring allegations from the villagers concerning fraudulent land allocation, fake surveys, sham compensation and even intimidation and repression, the CSOs have also demanded an independent and honest investigation.
The 16 organisations which include UPF, CADA, AMKIL, NIMPAL, MAPI Council, Thoubal Ima etc have expressed hope that the Governor will act swiftly to protect the rights, homes and dignity of Lei Ingkhol villagers.
