Imphal, September 01 2025:
With over 100 loaded trucks reportedly stranded along the Imphal-Jiribam road, the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers' Union (AMRT&MWU) has accused the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) of inefficiently implementing highway projects, thereby causing troubles for drivers.
According to reports received by The Sangai Express from some drivers, the worst portion of National Highway 37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) is the 6 km stretch from the Kambiron CRPF camp to Barak Bridge.
Inefficient project implementation such as in hill cutting for double-lane upgradation has led to mud accumulation, making it extremely difficult for drivers to navigate, they said.
These drivers also mentioned that the stretch of the highway is slippery, and vehicles struggle to climb steep portions, while some sections are heavily muddy.
They stated that some trucks have been stranded for as long as 7 to 15 days, and many drivers are running out of food supplies.
AMRT&MWU general secretary Maimom Anil told the media that the poor condition of Manipur's highways, critical lifelines for the State's residents, highlights substandard project implementation by NHIDCL.
He urged the Governor and Chief Secretary to direct NHIDCL and associated companies to properly execute highway projects and take immediate action to ensure stranded trucks can reach Imphal.
Highlighting that the Imphal-Dimapur highway remains blocked due to a landslide at Phesama, he noted that improper project implementation by NHIDCL and associated companies has turned the Imphal-Jiribam road into a nightmare for drivers.
Anil further stated that the highway project along the most problematic section is being executed by Ganpati.
Other sections of the highway managed by different companies have no issues, he added.
Further stating that the deplorable condition of the road stretch stems from improper project execution and oversight by NHIDCL, he questioned whether NHIDCL plans to trigger artificial inflation in Manipur.
Trucks were barred from crossing the Nungdolan bridge on August 29 and 30 due to scheduled repairs, but the bridge remained unrepaired, he said.
